"All individuals with developmental disabilities are contributing members of their neighborhoods and communities; make real choices and have control over their own lives; have the freedom to strive, excel, and make mistakes; are in a position to achieve personal goals, are in a position to affect policy and process decisions that affect their lives; and have the same rights, privileges, responsibilities, and opportunities of citizenship as does any other New Jersey resident."

Action Alert!

The Governor has announced $400 million in mid-year budget cuts.

Each Department is being asked to come up with its share of the cuts. The Department of Human Services is the largest department in the state. It is unclear how much the Department or the Division of Developmental Disabilities is being asked to cut. To find out more about it and what you can do, visit the Arc's and ABCD's (the Alliance for the Betterment of Citizens with Disabilities) web sites at: http://www.arcnj.org/  http://www.abcdnj.org/action

NJ Developmental Disabilities Coalition

The coalition is continuing its efforts to help ensure that services to people with developmental disabilities don’t get cut in next year’s budget either! We are facing a $5-8 billion dollar deficit and must work to educate the new administration and legislature about how important current supports and services are for thousands of people with developmental disabilities in New Jersey.

Just Say Something Campaign

Help Make Positive Changes

The Most Effective Way To Help Make Positive Changes Is To Just Say Something About What You Think Is Right And What You Think Is Wrong. Speech It's Not Only A Right It’s A Responsibility.

The NJ Council on Developmental Disabilities asks you to:

Just Say Something The Next Time:
You Hear Someone Using Disrespectful Language Like The “R” Word ; You Read
About Something Really Cool for Students with Disabilities at the Local School; A Neighbor Complains That People With Developmental Disabilities Shouldn’t Be Living On Our Block; The Governor Announces Expanded Health Care Coverage For People With Autism And Other Developmental Disabilities.

When You See Something You Like, Or Something You Don’t,
Just Say Something About It.

Find out more. Go to the Just Say Something blog site
at:
www.JustSaySomething.org

Also, visit the campaign's

Face Book site:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Just-Say-Something/123350082189

The Council’s R-word Campaign

The Council’s R-word Campaign is an ongoing effort to stop the use of the word retarded and the slur “retard.” We are working with the New Jersey Self-Advocacy Project and other groups to officially use intellectual disability and to stop the informal use of the words that have become far too common as a “joking” put down.

The words are no joke to people with developmental disabilities and those that work with them.

Help us Get the Word Out about Getting the “R” Word Out.

And contact the Council to schedule presentations; and to order T-Shirts, bumper stickers, and buttons. 609.292.3745

Arts Unbound

Supported by funds from the NJCDD and sales of product, Arts Unbound offers artists with developmental disabilities a market for their work. More importantly, it offers individuals a chance to learn the art business from the ground up. The goal is to provide them with an outlet for their art as well as skills needed to work in the greater arts community.
