News for Families

The EARLI Study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is a national ground-breaking research study looking at possible environmental and genetic factors contributing to the development of autism. It is the first and most comprehensive study of its kind, in that it uses real-time data collected over the course of several years to investigate potential causes of autism as they relate to both the environment and genetics.  The EARLI Study enrolls mothers of a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the start of a new pregnancy and follows mom and baby very closely through pregnancy and for the first three years of the new baby’s life.

Dual Diagnosis: Individuals with Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health Needs :

Families with loved ones who are dually diagnosed with developmental disabilities and mental health needs have many questions about the characteristics of dual diagnosis and behavioral crisis. A Handbook for families has been developed by Donna Icovino, a parent, advocate and Co-Chair of Commissioner's Task Force on Dual Diagnosis, and Lucy Escralew, Ph.D., Program Director for Statewide Clinical Consultation and Training (SCCAT) of Trinitas Regional Medical Center and member of the N.J. Department of Human Services Dual Diagnosis Task Force. Click on  the link to get the report, which is posted on the Alliance for the Betterment of Citizens With Disabilities (ABCD) Web site. REGIONAL FAMILY SUPPORT PLANNING COUNCILS
Regional Family Support Planning Councils work to allow families to make the best decisions that best fit their needs. Family members of people with developmental disabilities or individuals with developmental disabilities can serve on their regional planning council. As a council member, you will assist and advise the Division of Developmental Disabilities as to how resources can best meet the needs of families and individuals living in your region. Members are reimbursed for reasonable and customary expenses for travel and childcare. Email Statewide Family Support Coordinator Bonnie Brien if you are interested in becoming member.

WANTED: Family Support Planning Council members
Family members of people with developmental disabilities or individuals with developmental disabilities are invited to serve on a Regional Family Support Planning Council (RFSPC). The nine regional councils assist and advise the Division of Developmental Disabilities on how resources can best meet the needs of families and individuals in their region. Council members are reimbursed for reasonable and customary expenses for travel, childcare, respite and communication.  This is an opportunity to learn about the system and help mold the manner in which services and supports will be provided to families in the future.
