Overview The Council has funding available to help people with developmental disabilities and their families attend conferences, seminars and other advocacy training and information building activities they may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend.
The fund is available on first come first serve basis for in- and out-of-state activities related specifically to developmental disabilities. The purpose is to increase training and information gathering opportunities to broader numbers of advocates with developmental disabilities and their immediate family.
You must provide the Council with information about the event: the reason you want to attend, why you need the Council’s support (for instance, other funding that you applied for and were denied or those funds were not enough to allow you to participate), and other information that will help us make a good decision about your request.
Background and Purpose Federal guidelines for councils on developmental disabilities mandate that each council work to support leadership training opportunities for people with developmental disabilities so that the potential leaders of tomorrow get the information and skills they need to be effective advocates for themselves and others. As part of that effort, the Council has earmarked funds to expand opportunities for people with developmental disabilities, and selected family members, to participate in conferences, seminars, trainings and other activities that will help them build those skills.
The funds are targeted to individuals who have had limited experiences of these kinds. It is designed to help those who might not otherwise get to take advantage of these kinds of opportunities because they are not connected with other funding sources and/or do not have the funds themselves to be able to pay for the full costs of attending.
Individuals apply directly to the Council and must meet certain criteria in order to receive funding. No more than $500 for in-state events and $1200 for out-of-state events will be provided to any individual applicant annually.
Events must be related to issues affecting people with developmental disabilities and their families.
Details
Requests for funding will be evaluated on a first come first serve basis. Applicants must provide the Council with timely information—30 days before the event (exceptions may be made on a case by case basis)—about the event, the purpose for going, the reason(s) for the need for the Council’s support (including demonstration of a lack of other funding sources) and other information pertinent to the individual request, as requested.
In addition to costs directly associated with the event—such as registration, travel and accommodations—you may also ask for help with other related expenses, such as personal care, child care and assistive equipment. Costs for personal attendants will be evaluated independently and will not count against the cap for an individual’s request.
For people requesting funding help to go to the same in-state conference, up to five (5) will be considered for the same event.
The Council is not able to provide up-front money. Situations will need to be arranged so that the Council reimburses approved expenditures with valid receipts. The Council may also pay vendors directly. Other methods of payment will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
Applicants will be required to submit a short report to the Council about their experiences and what they gained from them within 30 days of the end of the event. Certain applicants may also be asked to present to the full Council in person, but that is voluntary.
All applications are evaluated and approved at the discretion of Council staff.
