NOTEWORTHY LEGISLATION
Updated December 2003

Section 1 - State Legislation
State of New Jersey 210th Legislature - 2002-2003
Second Session: January - December 2003

This section describes bills currently pending before the Senate or Assembly of the State of New Jersey Legislature, or awaiting action by the Governor. The description of each bill includes the name of the main sponsors along with their party affiliation and State legislative district.

A bill may be introduced in only one house of the Legislature and, if that house votes to pass the bill, it will be sent to the other house for consideration. On many other occasions, a bill is introduced in both houses of the Legislature and, even though the bills have identical or similar language, each one is identified by a different bill number and is sponsored by a different legislator. Such bills are discussed as one legislative initiative in this section. If one house of the Legislature votes favorably on its version of the bill, it will forward its version of the bill to the other house, which may then substitute that version for its own or continue to consider both the Assembly and Senate versions of the bill.

Bills are reviewed by Legislative Committees of each house. Committees may hear public testimony on bills and may amend bills or submit committee substitutes for pending legislation.
